How a Customer’s Pre-Owned Fire Truck Became Another Fire Department’s New Answer

Posted by Billy Claunch, on October 10, 2023

When Savannah (TN) Fire Department was exploring the possibility of refurbishing their older E-ONE 95 Platform, they located a truck from another fire department and then asked Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus (www.firetruckmall.com) to collaborate with them at that point.  The initial goal being to evaluate the truck and its existing records to determine if it was a good candidate for a refurbishment project. Once that step was completed, a refurbishment project was ultimately established.

To further explain, a separate fire department in Kentucky was selling their E-ONE HP105 Platform that was actually newer than Savannah’s existing E-ONE 95 Platform.  Based on this, Savannah Fire Rescue elected to purchase the pre-owned E-ONE HP105 and as noted, engaged Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus (BMFA) to execute a complete refurbishment on this apparatus.  Utilizing BMFA’s extensive refurbishment expertise with dedicated personnel, equipment and facilities, this turn of events led to an exceptional new solution for Savannah Fire Rescue.

After reviewing the possibilities with Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus and their experienced and well qualified staff, Savannah’s refurbishment project for the 105’ aerial platform or tower entailed several aspects which consisted of the following major elements:

  • Evaluation of the chassis diesel engine and replacement of several components including the turbocharger, injectors, water pump, fuel pump, air compressor and thermostats.

  • Automatic transmission replacement with a factory remanufactured unit.

  • Major water pump rebuild including the transfer case.

  • Rebuild of all aerial, outrigger and stabilizer hydraulic cylinders.

  • Replacement of the hydroelectric swivel and the diverter valve.

  • Replacement of all Nylatron slide pads with the aerial device.

  • Replacement of all aerial extend and retract cables.

  • Hydrostatic testing and recertification of breathing air bottles.

  • Rebuild of the aerial waterway.

  • New aerial certification for the device.

  • Upgrade of all upper and lower level emergency lighting as well as D.OT., ground, and scene lighting.

  • Upgrade of the electronic siren system.

  • Upgrade of the cab air conditioning system.

  • Upgrade of all stepping surfaces.

  • A complete apparatus repaint as well as a complete new graphics package.

Once finished, the before and after results of the refurbishment were simply amazing.  While certainly not a new fire truck, Savannah now has a newer aerial platform for their fleet that has allowed them to best utilize their budget resources for the optimal value and have a rig in service within an acceptable delivery time.

Of course, none of this is new for Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus.  For years, multiple fire departments (both civilian and military) have been served with major refurbishment programs to extend the useful service life of existing fire apparatus as well as more basic revitalization projects for used fire trucks that may involve new paint and graphics.

Consider the creative possibilities today and let Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus (www.firetruckmall.com) find a solution path that will work for your fire department’s apparatus and budget needs.
